I like to think that I have a well balanced mental diet.

Key words here are ‘I like to think that…’

I love movies and books that are extremely well executed. From the cinematography to the pain staking character development to plots that are not trite or predictable. Ones that really make you think.

Some of my favorite movies for example fit the bill – Memento, Apocalypse Now, Fight Club, etc.

And I’m currently reading, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. I find myself entranced in the world Murakami has painted. To quote one of the blurbs on the book cover, it is ‘Dreamlike and compelling…’ His writing is well crafted and a bit quirky, a favorite combo of mine.

These above items are nourishing. They are the oh-so-good-for-you, leafy green, whole grains, lean protein of my mental diet.

But then… I find myself watching…

Jersey Shore.

Eeep! There I said it. Hi my name is Shannon and I totally watch trash T.V.  And to keep up with my balanced diet analogy – is akin to eating a deep fried Twinkie. It has quadruple negative nutritional value – but – it just tastes so. darn. good.

Because sometimes I need a break from all the deep thinking. To zone out. And well, Jersey Shore does just that. I’m not sure you could get anymore trashy and mind numbing. Although…

In all honesty – sometimes you just have to take a break from all the whole wheat, low fat, leafy greeny veggies and eat that deep fried deliciousness every once and while. Because life needs deep fried Twinkies.

Or at least I do…
